Bye Bye Puku Challenge
Bye Bye Puku Challenge is a 6 week holistic fitness and well-being weight loss program that encompasses three main areas of health; mindset, nutrition and physical exercise. This is a pilot program.
The program is designed to target clinically obese individuals that are at high risk of suffering from diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease. These individuals are from low social economic backgrounds and in some cases have gang affiliations. Given their backgrounds and poor health, these individuals are at a stage in their lives where they need assistance to turn their lives around. However, many of them do not have the financial means to seek assistance from fitness and nutrition professionals. This program is therefore fundamental to not only changing these individual’s lives but in changing the face of our community.
Working in conjunction with a Victoria University Masters student, the Apple CART programme was offered to CART whanau commencing April 2013 for the duration of 3 months.
The aim was to take a positive approach to building whanau and community connectedness, as well as healthy living and eating practices, through the weekly delivery of fruit and vegetable boxes to select whanau targeted via the CART client database. Along with the vegetable boxes, CART provided healthy recipes in line with Ministry of Health guidelines regarding nutrition and serving sizes, and fortnightly cooking workshops were held for the participating whanau.
